312 The staff is certified by an appropriate national
pastoral credentialing agency recognized by COMISS, including
the American Association of Pastoral Counselors
(AAPC), the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
(ACPE), the Association of Mental Health Clergy
(AMHC), the College of Chaplains (COC), the National
Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), the National
Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and the
National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains
(NAVAC). |
HR.2 The hospital provides an adequate number of staff
members whose qualifications are consistent with job responsibilities. Example for

Some definitions of qualified individuals that are profession-specific or that may
be specified in a states licensure code include:
chaplain, qualified-An individual who is certified by a pastoral care certifying
agency or who has the documented equivalent in education, training, and experience, with
evidence of relevant continuing education. Examples of certifying agencies are the
Coalition on Ministry in Specialized Settings/Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Pastoral Services and the Hospital Chaplains Ministry of America (COMISS/JCAPS and HCMA).
*Please note that a definition of qualified chaplain is currently included in Update
2 of the 1998 AMH; however, the definition has been edited to read as listed above for
update 4 which will not be printed and released until the end of 1998 or the beginning of
1999.
